The Senior Special Assistant to the Presidenton Media, Mallam Garba Shehu, has apologise over his misrepresentation of figures while reacting to the abduction of more than 300 students of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State last weekend.

Shehu, during an interview granted the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), had said only 10 students of the school were as at then not accounted for.

Later in a couple of tweets posted on his verified Twitter handle, he explained that he didn’t make the figure to downplay the seriousness of the situation.

There had been tons of negative reactions, especially on different social media platforms, to the presidential spokesman’s assertion, many of them describing him as insensitive.

He tweeted, “I apologize for the incorrect communication citing that only 10 students were kidnapped at the science school, Kankara”

“This communication of numbers was provided by persons that should ideally know. These numbers were seen to conflict with what was available at that time.”

“Please understand that this communication was in no way done to downplay the seriousness of the situation.”

“Please accept my sincere apologies on this matter as we continue to move our great Nation Nigeria forward. Thank you.”
