#EndSARS protest: Two protesters killed, others injured in osun

Gov. Gboyega Oyetola

Governor Oyetola addressing protesters

No fewer than two protesters have been killed in a fracas that ensued between the State of Osun Governor, Gboyega Oyetola’s convoy and some armed thugs in Osogbo, Osun State, during the #EndSARS protest on Saturday.

Witnesses who spoke with our correspondent said the killing occurred in Ayepe area of Osogbo around 4 p.m.

Pictures and videos showing the victims and properties destroyed are also trending on social media, particularly, Twitter.

The incident happened when Mr Oyetola convoy was attacked in the state capital. The attackers were armed with cutlass, broken bottles, stones and all sorts of weapons.

It took efforts of security operatives to rescue Mr Oyetola from the scene.

This incident occurred as the governor addressed protesters.

The Commissioner for Information and Civic orientation in the state, Mrs Funke Egbemode, who was also at the site of the incident described the incident as an attempt on the lives of the Governor and other government officials in his entourage which included the Deputy Governor, Secretary to the state government and other top government officials.

“This was assassination attempt. This was certainly beyond the #EndSARS protest. The people who launched the attack were not protesters at all.

“Protests have been going on in the State for some days now, and there had been no attack on any government official since the beginning of the protest.

“However, today’s attack changed the narrative. It was not a spontaneous attempt, the attackers had it all planned. They had guns and other weapons. In fact, it was a woman who smashed the windscreen of the vehicle we were in.

“It is really sad that these people infiltrated the ranks of the peaceful protesters and took advantage of the Governor’s walk with the youths to execute their sinister intentions.

“It was simply a street coup to take out the Governor, his Deputy and the Secretary to the State Government, all of whom were exposed during the protest and had to be smuggled into vehicles when the attack was launched”, Egbemode stated.
