APC Announces Timetable For Ekiti And Osun Governorship Elections

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) announced the release of its timetable for the governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States, which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set for June 18, 2022, and July 16, 2022, respectively, ahead of the governorship elections in the two South-West states.

Senator John James Akpanudodehe, the National Secretary of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), said that the sale of nomination forms for Ekiti State would begin on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, and for Osun State will begin on Thursday, November 18, 2021.

Further investigation revealed that applicant screening and the publication of claims and objections had been scheduled for January 13, 2022 and January 17, 2022, respectively, with screening appeals to be heard on January 19, 2022.

Ekiti State’s governorship primary and election appeals have been set for January 22 and 26, 2022, respectively.

The statement, however, was mute on the principal mode. For the emergence of its candidates for general elections, the APC 2014 Constitution (as modified) provides for direct, indirect, and consensus choices.

However, checks revealed that the Electoral Act No. 6 2010 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill 2021, which was enacted by both chambers of the National Assembly, chose the direct primary as the single option for selecting candidates for all political parties.

The modified bill, on the other hand, is awaiting President Muhammadu Buhari’s signature.
